There are no specifics per Islam religion on Islam, Muslim flags, or Islam religion symbols. The flags of Islamic countries are not subject to any Islamic requirements or obligations. These flags are subject to only political and local country practices. In time of the prophet (PBUH), a peace of plain green cloth was used as a flag.
Nothing in Islam religion or Islamic history is called Muslim star. However, it is politically usual to have a five corner star on flags of some Muslim countries.
The moon crescent on the bottom of certain flags is often a symbol of Islam, representing the lunar calendar used in Islamic traditions. It is commonly seen on flags of Muslim-majority countries and signifies the importance of the Islamic faith in those nations.
It has no relation religiously with Islam. It may be used politically on flags but has no relation with the religion of Islam.

aho07.Here is a shocker.. Islam has no symbol. The crescent moon and the star is not an Islamic symbol, but was displayed on flags of Muslim empires (i.e. the Ottoman Empire). Also consider that the Muslim calendar is lunar based, and each month begins with the crescent moon. But if this was a symbol of Islam, which is not, it would be mentioned as such in either the Holy Qur'an or hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
Green represents Islam.
Red for secularism, White for Islam
Well, the Prophet (PBUH) and his caravan used to carry (generally) solid black, green, or white flags. Green was the colour worn by the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). So Green is most preferable. In addition to green, which symbolizes growth and flourishing (especially in a desert), the other colors of Islam are: red, white, and black. It is not surprising, therefore, that most Muslim countries use these colors exclusively on their flags.
