The Pharisees were Jews who took Jewish law very seriously.

Christians at the time were Jews who followed Jesus and eventually ceased to consider themselves to be Jews.

.

Catholic AnswerThe Pharisees were Jews who took the law very seriously. Our Blessed Lord, Himself, praised their behavior - as far as it went, but pointed out that it was all outward, and one of the primary things that He came to teach was the our hearts must be converted. We are going to be judged on our faith and our works, you cannot be saved with just one or the other, but with both. The Pharisees emphasised the works to the exclusion of faith. The heretics, such as the protestants, emphasised faith to the exclusion of works. Our Blessed Lord very plainly, and often, said that it was both.

Why did Jesus hate the Pharisees?

A:Compared to the Sadducees, the Pharisees were more concerned with moral issues and the rights of the common people - many of the same concerns that Christianity expressed. Since the gospels were written long after the death of Jesus, it may be that the gospel references to the Pharisees were more related to rivalry between the early Christians and the Pharisees, rather than any genuine spirit of animosity on the part of Jesus. The first gospel, that of Mark, was written approximately 70 CE, at the end of the First Roman-Jewish War, when the old order of Temple Judaism was destroyed, the Sadducees had been eliminated and the Christians and Pharisees were both striving to be seen as the natural successor to Temple Judaism.

What did other groups like the early christians and high priests think of the pharisees?

Most early Christians didn't like the Pharisees, partially because they acted very stuck-up, like they mattered more to God and to the king than anyone else. The Christians also didn't particularly like them because the were sneaky and would try to find fault in one's every move. This is very apparent with Jesus, especially when he'd go to the temple and heal people or do work on he Sabbath, which was against the law of Moses. The Pharisees would often try to trick him or accuse him of blasphemy for claiming that God was his father. And the high priests and the Pharisees were basically the same thing.
