What is the importance of the ka'bah?

It was built and worshipped even before the birth of Muhammad. Pilgrimage to Mecca was already in practice. Muhammad accepted it's place in Islam through divine revelation. The meteorite was seen as a special gift from God. It was even connected with Adam and Abraham and even the angel Gabriel, thought to have carried it to earth.

The Ka'ba is what all Muslims pray toward but they do not pray to the Ka'ba itself.

Also, in Islamic history the Ka'bah is believed to be built by the prophet Ibrahim, and his son, Ishmael on god's orders. The Ka'bah is also one of the places visited during Hedge, in which it is walked around seven times representing when Ishmael's mother walked around the mountains in the desert seven times trying to find water for her infant, Ishmael.
