Sawm or fasting is that Muslims are obliged to abstain from all food, drink, use of tobacco, and conjugal relations over the period from dawn through sunset. However, that is the physical component of the fasting; the spiritual aspects and importance of fasting (or Sawm) include:
* Refraining from gossiping, lying, slandering and all traits of bad character.
* A fasting person's aim is to attain purity of thought and action.
* The act of fasting redirects the hearts away from worldly mundane activities, towards Allah - the Lord of the Heavens and the Earth.
* Sawm or fasting during the month of Ramadan is usually accompanied by prayer, recitation of the Qur'an, doing Zikr, endurance and self-discipline.
* Sawm is a good occasion of training - training the soul and body- to be able to exercise self-restraint.
* Fasting helps to overcome bad habits either gradually for some of us or immediately for those with a stronger will power.
Fasting has the following benefits that:
* Showing obedience to ALLAH (God) and tendency to be closer to Allah (God in English) mercy and forgiveness.
* Gaining spiritual self purification and full submission to ALLAH (God).
* Gaining motivation not to approach what is prohibited to be done by religion. If you are used, during fasting, to forbid yourself from eating food, drinking, doing sex with your partner of marriage (things that are allowed out of fasting) then you will be used to forbid yourself from doing what is prohibited to be done as drinking Alcohol, gambling, prostitution, cheating, etc...

Verses in the Quran that mention biodiversity include Surah An-Nur (24:45) which states that every living creature glorifies God, and Surah An-Nahl (16:10-11) which mentions how God has created diverse animals for humans to benefit from.

(Quran 76:8) "And be good to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, neighbors who are near, neighbors who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer you meet, and those who have nothing." (Quran 4:36) "The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed of grain that sprouts seven ears; in every ear there are a hundred grains." (Quran 2:261)
You need to memorise certain Quranic verses and know a few surah and know the correct way to pray, and this can only be learned under supervision. Several books are available from Islamic book shops or online for guidance
