What is the last revealed ayah of the Quran?

After the farewell sermon, Prophet Mohammad s.a.w.s read these newly revealed verses to the people ( the last revelation ):

"This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion." [5:3]

The last revealed Ayah (or verse) is:

وَاتَّقُوا يَوْمًا تُرْجَعُونَ فِيهِ إِلَى اللَّـهِ ۖ ثُمَّ تُوَفَّىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَّا كَسَبَتْ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ ﴿٢٨١﴾

{And fear the day when you shall be brought back to God. Then shall every soul be paid what it earned and none shall be dealt with unjustly.}

[Quran, chapter 2, verse 281]

Other viewsMany Muslim scholars believe that the last ayah revealed in the Qur'an was ayah 281 in Surah 2 (Al-Bakarah):

'And fear the day when you shall be brought back to God. Then shall every soul be paid what it earned and none shall be dealt with unjustly.'

(2:281)

Some others say that the last ayah revealed were either 2:282 or 2:278. Some also believe that all three of these verses were revealed on the same night, nine nights before the Prophet Muhammad (S) died.

Others hold the opinion that 5:4 was the last ayah revealed:

'This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.'

Very few believe that this was the last ayah revealed, but some do because they feel it to be the completion of the religion, and therefore the last message sent, but this doesn't fit in because this was revealed on the last pilgrimage of Prophet Muhammad (S), and, as stated above, the last verse was revealed nine nights before he died.

Most probably: Al yuma akmalto lakum deenu kum..... "Today I have completed your deen, and fulfilled my Blessings, and liked Islam for you Islam as your deen". Revealed on the Day of Arafaat, Hajj.

Some people think by mistake that the last revealed Ayah is Surah Al-Maidah:

"This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion." [5:3]

However, this is not true. The last revealed Ayah is:

وَاتَّقُوا يَوْمًا تُرْجَعُونَ فِيهِ إِلَى اللَّـهِ ۖ ثُمَّ تُوَفَّىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَّا كَسَبَتْ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ ﴿٢٨١﴾

{And fear the day when you shall be brought back to God. Then shall every soul be paid what it earned and none shall be dealt with unjustly.}

[Quran, chapter 2, verse 281]
