The word gospel in the Greek New Testament - ευαγγέλιον (euangelion) is a compound noun, made up of two words eu- good and anglion - message (from the same root as angel, the messenger of God), so it literally means - "good message from God"

The gospel, or the good message that Christians are to proclaim in this age is the gospel of the grace of God (Acts 20:24) The gospel, or the good message is very well summed up by Paul the apostle in 1+Corinthians 15:1-4 - "Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand, by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures" As you can see, the gospel meaning is pretty simple, it is the salvation of sinners through believing in, or trusting in the death of Christ, the Messiah for our sins, His burial and resurrection. And all of that, Paul adds, was according to the scripture - that is what is known today as the Old Testament or the Tanach.
