Monasteries, abbeys and priories all have their own churches attached to the living quarters. Monastic churches are often large, ornate and grand buildings. In the UK some abbey churches were so grand that when the monasteries were destroyed by Henry VIII the churches survived, many of which became cathedrals afterwards as they were so grand. The churches were built by the monks themselves as many trained to be excellent masons and builders.
