It was GD's covenant with Abraham, then Abram,not Abraham's with GD. It does make a difference. A covenant is a relationship in which one parties promises to provide something. There are conditional and unconditional covenants. The one GD made with Abraham required no conditions but did require a sign of acceptance--the circumcision of the foreskin of a male's sexual organs upon his 8th day of life. GD first mentions the provisions in Genesis 12:1-3 == The Call of Abram 1 The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. 2 "I will make you into a great nation

and I will bless you;

I will make your name great,

and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you,

and whoever curses you I will curse;

and all peoples on earth

will be blessed through you." GD speaks about it again in Genesis 15: 17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. 18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates- 19 the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20 Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites."
