King David's strengths were a valiant spirit, military strategic and diplomatic skills, musical and poetic gifts, ability to admit his faults, and an unshakeable trust in God. King David was very successful in war and as a king. Kings I seems to convey that his faith and obedience to God were his greatest strengths, although he did mess up twice by arranging the death of Uriah and his favoritism for his son Absolom. Except for these incidents, David seems to have been a perfect king.

King David also was strong enough to admit when he was wrong or had sinned as he did in his adultery with Bathsheba (as well as the 'arranged murder' of Uriah). This quality is part of why he was called 'a man after God's own heart.'

As for his evident prowess in war he also gave God the credit for this 'by my God can I crush a troop, by my God can I leap over a wall.' This faith and strong trust in God also gave him confidence in his endeavors. Although he had undoubted skill, partly developed in his time while a shepherd boy his trust in God gave him a confidence and an assurance which added to his personal strength. This, in itself was one of his greatest strengths and was also conspicuous when absent.
