Some have placed the 'Middle Ages' as being from the 4th Century to the 16th Century AD. That being said, the original movement called Christianity which was spawned in Jerusalem and spread to the then known world via the Apostles' mission given to them by Jesus (founded the movement), soon lost its ability to worship freely beginning at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD via Roman Emperor Constantine. It soon became 'illegal' to practice as Christ and His followers did after Emperor Theodosius in 381 AD at the first Council of Constantinople. Hereafter, all would either follow the newly termed 'Catholic' church or be persecuted. See related link:
