The founder of Buddhism was a man named Siddhartha Gautama. Siddhartha was a Hindu prince. There was a prophecy that stated that he would either become a great world leadr or would be the founder of a new religion. His father, the king, of course wanted him to be a leader like himself, so he kept him hidden from the ways of the world. If he saw what pain and struggle people were going through, he would want to start something to help the people - possibly a religion. So Siddhartha was kept locked up in part of the castle they lived in. One day, he told his father that he wanted to leave, to experience the world. He left his guarded life and started to see the reality. On his travels, he saw a dead man and a diseased man. He had no idea what had happened to these men. No one had ever told him about death. This confused the former prince. He sat down at a tree and created the basis of the religion Buddhism. He sought to overcome death and disease with this religion. This tree is called The Tree of Enlightenment. There he reached a state of absolute peacefulness. Siddhartha Gautama awoke out of this state and became The Buddha - The Awakened One.
