Well firstly, Jehovah God tells Joshua to be courageous and be strong, he says this not once, but actually three times. (Joshua 1:6,7,9) Of course to be sure, Joshua will need the courage and the strength to lead the nations successfully into the Promised Land. How can he summon these noble qualities?
Well Joshua can draw courage and strength from the inspired writings. At Joshua 1:7 it says: "Take care to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you," Of course at that time, Joshua most likely had just a few books of the Bible in written form. such as the five books of Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy) and the book of Job, and one or two psalms.
However, the mere possession of God's Word will not guarantee success. In order to benefit from it, Joshua needs to do two things. First, Joshua must regularly fill his heart with God's word. Jehovah says: "You must in an undertone read in it day and night.-Joshua 1:8. By the way, one reference work states: "God was commanding Joshua to remember His Law by 'muttering' it to himself, 'pondering' it, or 'musing over' it." So reading and meditating on God's Word each and every day would help Joshua to handle the many challenges that would lie ahead and that is the many reasons why he was successful.
ANOTHER ANSWER:
FAITH through the Holy Spirit of God.
People tend to put their faith in men rather than God. But "success" in the eyes of God is achieved through one's OBEDIENCE to His Commandments. Through the intent in one's heart to keep and observe the LORD's Laws... and to follow through, manifesting that intent through one's actions, called "obedience." This is accomplished by the indwelling of God's Holy Spirit within a Faithful, Obedient person... case in point, Joshua.
Joshua had God's Holy Spirit:
"...Joshua son of Nun was full of the Spirit of Wisdom, for MOSES HAD LAID HIS HANDS ON HIM. So the [weary] people of Israel [after forty years wandering in the wilderness; where an unbelieving, rebellious generation had died off] OBEYED HIM and DID EVERYTHING JUST AS THE LORD COMMANDED." (Deut.34:9 NLT New Living Translation)
Most modern professing Christians, today [few of whom study and know the Bible and the Truth of God], know little or nothing about the "laying on of the hands" in the process of receiving God's Holy Spirit, passed on from one Faithful Believer to another, and the continuation of God's church from generation to generation.
"When the apostles back in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had accepted God's message, they sent Peter and John there. As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new Christians to receive the Holy Spirit. THE HOLY SPIRIT HAD NOT YET COME UPON ANY OF THEM, FOR THEY HAD ONLY BEEN BAPTIZED in the name of the LORD Jesus. Then Peter and John LAID THEIR HANDS UPON THESE BELIEVERS, and THEY RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT." (Acts 8:14-17 NLT)
Receiving the Holy Spirit of God is NOT A NEW THING that came about with Christ's disciples on that "New Testament" Day of Pentecost. Faithful Abel had it... Faithful Enoch had it... Faithful Noah had it... Faithful Abraham, Isaac and Jacob had it... and Faithful Moses had it. And it was passed on to Faithful Joshua, who received it when Moses "laid his hands on him."
God did NOT GIVE HIS HOLY SPIRIT TO THE ISRAELITES! He gave it to Moses, and Aaron, and certain "leaders" throughout the generations of His people. And Joshua was the next great leader of the Israelites after Moses... because he had God's Holy Spirit.
THAT was the KEY to his success in the conquest of the Promised Land -- the FAITH within him as provided by God's Holy Spirit within him... whereby Joshua's Obedience was made manifest.
"Be strong and very courageous. OBEY ALL THE LAWS MOSES GAVE YOU. Do not turn away from them, and you will be successful in everything you do. STUDY THIS BOOK of the LAW CONTINUALLY. Meditate on it DAY AND NIGHT so YOU MAY BE SURE TO OBEY ALL THAT IS WRITTEN IN IT. ONLY THEN WILL YOU SUCCEED. I COMMAND YOU - be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:7-9 NLT)
This is the Source and the KEY to TRUE SUCCESS in the eyes of God, regardless of one's endeavors, beit Peacetime or in the heat of battle.
"You have charged us to keep your Commandments carefully. Oh, that my actions would consistently reflect your principles! Then I will not be disgraced when I compare my life with your Commandments." (Ps.119:4-6 NLT)
"Teach me, O LORD, to follow every one of your principles. Give me Understanding and I will Obey your Law; I will put it into practice with all my heart. Make me walk along the path of your Commands, for that is where Happiness is found." (verses 33-35)
"Oh, how I Love your Law! I think about it all day long. Your Commandments make me wiser than my enemies, for your Commandments are my constant guide." (verses 97-98)
God tells us that adherence and obedience to His Laws are the KEY to SUCCESS. Joshua KEPT and OBEYED God's Laws.
Much of modern professing mainstream Christianity scoffs at God's Commandments... believing them to be DEAD and DONE AWAY. But the Living Word of God reveals quite the opposite of this evil view:
"Let this encourage [and strengthen, as Joshua was 'strong and courageous'] God's holy people to endure persecution patiently [as David was persecuted] and remain firm to the end, OBEYING HIS COMMANDMENTS and TRUSTING IN JESUS." (Rev.14:12 NLT)
Jesus [translated JOSHUA in Hebrew]... the Almighty Creator God of the Old Testament [John 1:1-3] in whom Joshua placed all his Faith and Obedience... and SUCCESS.
"...if you are unwilling to serve the LORD, then choose today whom you will serve... But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD." (Joshua 24:15 NLT)
Jericho
AnswerThe Book of Joshua is about the legendary conquest of the Promised Land and the distribution of the conquered land among the twelve tribes of Israel.
The Israelites were able to overcome the obstacle of iron chariots in their conquest of the Promised Land by trusting in God and following his guidance. Through their faith and obedience, they were able to achieve victory over their enemies, including those with iron chariots.
Joshua and Caleb, both faithful spies during the first reconnaissance of Canaan were the only two persons of their generationto enter the Promised Land when the conquest began.
God promised the promised land to the Israelites.
The biblical genealogies suggest that the military conquest of the Promised Land began around 1400 BCE, the traditionally accepted date. However, archaeologists say that there is no evidence of a military conquest and that the area that would become the Hebrew homeland remained quite sparsely populated until around 1200 BCE, when an gradual and apparently peaceful influx began.
The land refered to as the promised land is called Cannan.
The promised land that God had promised to the Isrealites was named Canaan.
The promised land that God had promised to the Isrealites was named Canaan.
A:It may seem strange that the spies sent by Moses reported back in fear of the giants they saw everywhere in the Promised Land, yet when Joshua led the Israelites into the Promised Land, he never once encountered even one giant. The Bible says the conquest went smoothly and the land did not devour (Numbers 13:32-33) the invading Hebrews. The giants were fables. The spies story was intended to create a sense of awe and dread among its listeners, but the conquest story did not need the giants so there was none.
Yes, Jericho was located in the region of Canaan, which is often referred to as the Promised Land in the biblical context. According to the Hebrew Bible, Jericho was one of the first cities the Israelites encountered after entering Canaan and was famously captured by them. Its strategic location made it significant in the conquest of the Promised Land.
The land promised to the people was Canaan.
