The significant legacies of Emperor Constantine are:

  • The conversion of the Roman Empire to Christianity. Although this was not accomplished during his lifetime, he set in train the process that made Christian domination of Rome inevitable.
  • Development of Christian doctrine and practices, through the Council of Nicaea. Probably Constantine's greatest regret is that he was never able to achieve unity of the Christian Church.
  • The construction of the city of Constantinople. While other Roman emperors built many fine cities, Constantinople exceeded them all in size and magnificence. Constantinople became the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire and eventually, as Istanbul, the capital of Turkey.
  • The decline of the Roman empire. Scholars believe that the conversion of Constantine to Christianity led to the fall of Rome, or at least that it hastened the inevitable.
