Muslims were never split in their religious faith or Islam principles. They are just referred to different schools or different historical views.

This claimed split was not in religion or because religious differences. The claimed split was historically on the approach to be adopted on the selection of who succeeds prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in ruling the Islamic State. Some Muslims (called after that Sunnis) preferred to elect Abou Bakr as the first successor in ruling the country (called Caliph). Some others (called after that Shiites) claimed that the ruler after prophet Muhammad death should be from Muhammad's family and according to this approach should be Aly Ibn Aboutaleb, Prophet Muhammad cousin and husband of his daughter Fatima. However, when Abou Bakr was agreed upon by the majority, all people (Sunnis and Shiites) accepted him as the first Caliph, including Aly (God be pleased with him) himself. The same was repeated again when Omar was elected as the second Caliph after Abou Bakr death and again after Othman election as the third Caliph. Then Aly was elected as the fourth Caliph.
