He will appear in the eastern sky above Jerusalem.

Answer:

Jesus tells us: "...as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall the coming of the Son of Man be." (Matt.24:27)

"Lightning" is a random phenomenon that strikes with unpredictability. While God could, of course, cause lightning to come out of the east and travel into the west... it's more likely that He is talking about the "path of the sun" in the course of a day, rising in the east and setting in the west. Not "lightning"... but "the lightening of the sun."

Jesus' appearance today is described for us as: "...His eyes were as a flame of fire... and His countenance was AS THE SUN SHINETH IN HIS STRENGTH." (Rev.1:14-16)

The "Day of the Lord"... the time of Jesus' return... is also described as being a time of "darkness" over all the earth.

"...for the Day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand; a DAY OF DARKNESS and of GLOOMINESS, a Day of clouds and of THICK DARKNESS..." (Joel 2:1-2).

These descriptions taken together add up to Jesus approaching an earth covered with a dark impenetrable gloominess that will deter the inhabitants on earth from following any lightning strike phenomenon.

But the steady brilliance of the sun [Jesus' face] cutting through the clouds is the more credible expectation of what to look for.

From His description of the "lightening" that will appear in the east... He will be that brilliant "sun-like" Light. The traveling of that lightening from east to west, the regular path of the sun, suggests that He will be making an orbit totally around the world, taking a sun-like path, gathering all of His saints scattered around the world, before He descends upon the Mount of Olives [Zech.14:4).

He tells us that "all the tribes [nations] of the earth will see Him... and mourn [Matt.24:30]. In order for all the nations to see it... an orbit of the earth is required.

"And He shall send His angels with a great sound of a Trumpet, and they shall gather together His elect from THE FOUR WINDS [east, west, north and south], from ONE END OF HEAVEN TO THE OTHER." (verse 31)

Prophetically known as the "DAY of the Lord" -- Jesus' return may very well take up an entire 24-hour day of orbiting and gathering of His saints in an "east to west" direction. And it will conclude over Jerusalem where He is prophesied to land:

"...And His feet shall stand in that Day upon the Mount of Olives..." (Zech.14:4).
