'Beliefs' are just that - - - 'beliefs'. Beliefs are not necessarily true, just because they are believed. The word 'believe' is not equivilant to 'fact'. Yet all too often, beliefs are arbitrarily considerd by some as if they were facts.

You often find examples of beliefs; and counter-beliefs, on wiki answers.

One example I recently encountered is found in the LINK below.

The question is: Were the 7 days of creation in The Bible, were they 24 hour days? You will find examples of arbitrary beliefs. You have a starting belief, then a counter belief. But they are both simply beliefs at this point. Both parties present their 'evidence'. Once you hear the evidence; you are in a better position to decide which belief you feel has more convincing evidence.

Another example: Many religions believe that God 'torments eternally' those who do not accept Jesus. They are even drawn to such a god; and even worship such a god.

But then others, for example like Jehovah's Witnesses; avoid that belief like the plague. They believe that Jehovah is 'Love, compassionate, kindly, forgiving, merciful'.

Both will have their 'evidence'. But once you hear the full scope of both sides, you will be drawn either to one belief, or the other; (or you might remain completely neutral regarding the 'belief'.)

Therefore, 'beliefs' are merely a STARTING POINT. Research; evidence; and sometimes just plain logic, will decide which belief you subscribe to.

Paradoxically: You could also consider whether the belief that a God does not exist - 'non-belief' - is the true belief.

If you means by belief the religious belief, then every one considers his/her belief is the true belief; otherwise he/she will abandon this belief. It is your own responsibility to read in the different beliefs, judge your mind and feelings and arguments, then you decide by yourself which religious belief is true.

How can I determine if my belief is justified and true according to the statement "my belief is a justified belief if and only if it is in fact a true belief"?

To determine if your belief is justified and true according to the statement "my belief is a justified belief if and only if it is in fact a true belief," you need to ensure that your belief is not only true but also supported by good reasons or evidence. Just because a belief is true does not necessarily mean it is justified. Justification requires evidence or reasoning to support the truth of the belief.
