I think this is quite a hard question to answer, you could look at official census data where it exists. However what we know is that many Buddhists don't regard Buddhism as a religion therefore won't necessarily show up on any official data. Buddhists may keep their views private, particularly if they live in conditions where their ideas are difficult for their peers to accept or understand.

Buddhists are found among all the world's people. Most cultures in the world have Buddhist followers and accept them. Buddhism is least prevalent in Africa, Ilamic countries in the Middle East and most prevalent in Asia.

Buddhists are not a tribe. Buddhism is a religion. We Buddhists live throughout the entire world.
Buddhists do not fit into an imposed atheist/theist categorization. Buddhists have no god(s) but believe in an afterlife and an immortal part of a human's existence. The first would qualify them as atheists to many religious people. The second and third would make them not 100% in line with the "material world only" thinking of many atheists.
