Yes as the population was very very few he had no chice at all.

Theological AnswerYour question presupposes that the whole story of Genesis - especially the first few chapters, is historically and literally true. Creationists today will maintain that it is, and that the whole of scripture is inerrant and cannot be questioned. It's interesting to note that the formation of the idea of Creationism as such was a backlash against the Enlightenment (where, I believe the pendulum swung too far) whilst in the past there was a much more pragmatic and sensible view of Genesis.

In the original Hebrew Genesis is actually a poem, and an allegorical poem that speaks of God's love for humanity. Though absolutely true in its allegory, it was never intended to be a scientific treatise or explanation of Creation, nor were Adam and Eve within the story intended, except by hardliners, to be real people. For one thing Adam means 'mankind' and so refers to all of mankind rather than one, historical man. As an example, suppose someone in the distant future dug up C S Lewis's Narnia stories - especially the Lion, Witch and Wardrobe and declared them as historically accurate. Then the 'new Creationists' would have us believe in talking Lions, a kingdom called

Narnia and a magic wardrobe. So we know the book to be fiction, but nevertheless the message is true: that the love of God in Christ (the Aslan figure) will triumph over sin and death (represented by the White Witch) whether or not Aslan is sacrificed for everyone's sins. In the book Aslan came back even more powerful; at the tomb Christ did the same. So there is much truth tied up in allegory.

Therefore Genesis was never intened to be taken as factually true despite the underlying true allegorical message. If it was, there would not be so many inconsistencies and silly interpretations. Therefore, one can only ask where Cain got his wife from if you believe Genesis literally. Most Christians do not, however, as they have studied Genesis carefully and regard it as spiritually and allegorically true but historically not. There are some, mostly Creationists, and mostly in the USA, who claim that you can only be 'truly' Christian if you take the whole of scripture as inerrant and literal. This begs the question 'where is their God?' Is their God the God of supreme and all encompassing unconditional love of which Jesus spoke, or is their god scripture, that must never be questioned or interpreted in a sensible and systematic manner, and which can be used out of context to back up, perhaps prejudiced, beliefs.
