Sisyphus is the man who is enslaved in Tartarus for a number of crimes against the Gods. He was the first king of Corinth and held his rule by killing others. He even attempted to kill his brother by using his brother's daughter. There were many things which caused him to be punished like this; he tricked Thanatos - God of Death, trapping him in Tartarus instead of himself. He tricked Persephone into sending him back up to the surface to scold his wife for not burying him properly.
His punishment was to attempt to roll a boulder up a hill, but it was always a futile effort as the boulder would always roll back down before it reached the top. All efforts he made would be futile, which was in reflection of his belief that he was more cunning than Zeus himself, so from that point on, nothing he did would be to any avail.
