God sends a message to Gog of the land of Magog in Ezekiel 38 & 39. So who then is Gog?

In Ezekiel 2-3 and again in 39:1, "Gog, of the land of Magog," is called the "prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal." In Ezekiel 38:5, he is allied with "Persia, Ethiopia(Cush in Hebrew), and Libya(Put in Hebrew)" as the New King James translates this verse - as well as "Gomer and...the house of Togarmah" (see verse 6).

Nearly all of these names can be found in the Table of Nations of Genesis 10:1-6, which lists the families of humanity descended from Noah "Now this is the genealogy of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And sons were born to them after the flood. The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.... The sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan....

The reader will note that Gog is not mentioned here. Some biblical scholars believe this may be because the name Magog actually means "land of Gog"-so that perhaps the actual son of Japheth was named Gog and the nation he founded became known as Magog. The name Gog then when seen in a later or future context would designate anyone who was from the land of Gog (i.e., from Magog).

Lastly, Ezekiel mentions this confederacy of peoples which some scholars - both biblical and secular have come to believe these peoples to be the modern nation states of Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Russia, China, Japan and other Indonesian descendants of Magog. These are the nations fielding the 200 million man army that will come across land to attempt to destroy Israel. The Book of Revelation tells of the outcome of this 'final' battle.
