Nicolas means "one who conquers the people". Irenaeus, one of the early church fathers wrote that Nicolas, who was made a deacon in Acts 6:, was a false believer who later became apostate; but because of his credentials he was able to enter churches and preach and thus lead them astray. This teaching was like the prophet Balaam's teachings and the people were lead into immorality and wickedness.

Another church father, Clement of Alexander says, "They abandoned themselves to pleasure like goats, leading a life of self-indulgence". Nicolas was a wicked man.
