In the tale of Sati she took her own life. She was also known as Dakshayani. She was born to King Daksha in ancient India. In her youth her father tried to propose marraiges to many rich or powerful men but she would not marry any. Her love was for only the god Shiva. In effort to marry him she fled to the woods and worshipped him only. After long tests Shiva finally conscented to marry Sati.

Dakshayani's father was enraged at the union and banned her from his household. King Daksha held a feast at his palace for the gods, intentionally not inviting his daughter and Shiva. Sati confused this act as, since she was his daughter, a way of telling her she needed no invitation to this event but should merely show up.

At the party Daksha called into question the honor and virtues of Shiva in front of all guests. Sati, madly in love with Shiva, felt that Shiva would never have suffered this dishonor were it not for their marriage. To attone for this and to hurt her father, Sati turned to self-immolation (to committ suicide using fire).
