Prophet Mohammad (or Muhammad) was the founder of Islam. He was born in Mecca. He got revelations from God in about 610BC, which were later written down in the Koran. He and his followers were persecuted and they fled from Mecca to Medina. It is called the Hegira and happened in 622BC - the 'official' year of the birth of Islam (and the starting point of the Islamic calendar). After gaining some power and more supporters in Medina, Muhammad led his followers into several battles, finally defeating Mecca in 630BC. He united the Arab tribes converting them to Islam. He died in 632.
