The Bereans were people who lived in Beroea, a city in Macedonia, near Thessalonica, where Paul preached on his second missionery journey. They were HIGHLY commended because, when it came to spiritual matters, they would not take anyone's word for anything. They carefully examined the Scriptures daily to see whether the things Paul taught them were supported by God's Word. They are a good example for Christians today. (Acts 17:10-11) Because of their diligence in proving the truth of what they were learning, many of these "noble-minded" persons, both Jews and Greeks listened and became Christians. Silas and Timothy were left behind to care for this new group in Beroea.-Acts 17:12-15.
On his third missionery journey, one of Paul's companions was Sopater, a Christian from Beroea.-Acts 20:1-4.

In our modern society, most anyone it seems. But no 'teacher' is required if the person approaches the Scripture in a humble manner, prays for understanding, and diligently searches the Bible like the Bereans did in Acts 17 - using whatever tools available like a dictionary, concordance, maps and varying translations and insight of other scholars (which doesn't necessarily make it correct). Persistence will pay off for the diligent 'student.' The most important rule of studying the Bible is to always allow it to interpret itself. The second rule is to read a Scripture in its fullest context and not simply the sentence itself.

The Bereans.Acts 17:10-12 - Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men. [NKJV]
