We believe this because it is in the Bible and God would not lie to anybody! we believe God loves us so much that He sacrificed His son Jesus to die so that we can go to heaven.

Many religions contain truth which is truth indeed and can be applied to all people everywhere, such as good moral principles and how to live right etc. Many religions also make claims about reality which are in the realm of personal belief and cannot be verified. In some cases they go directly contrary to what we know are facts about the world and the universe - I am not talking here about things which are disputed (such as the creation versus evolution debate), but about known facts such as that the earth is round not flat and that it isn't supported by four elephants.

Christianity is one example of one system which is firmly grounded in claims of historical reality. Although it contains much religious and spiritual teaching, it also records many historical events and claims that God has acted inspace and time. In the places where it intersects with real history and makes claims which relate to scientific facts, it is thus open to either verification or falsification.

With regard to the field of Archaeology, the archeologist Dr. Clifford Wilson has, in a multi volume work, listed 5000 individual discoveries which have verified details about people, cultures or events in the Bible. Other archaeologists have also asserted that not one single discovery in their field has ever contradicted the Bible's version of events.

Ancient genealogies, which existed in various isolated people groups, centuries prior to any contact with Christian missionaries, demonstrate a remarkable degree of conformity with the genealogical records of ancient peoples. Some of them even trace their ancestry back to Noah and Adam.

Christians believe that true science, contrary to current propaganda, contains nothing which contradicts anything the Bible says about the earth and universe. This includes the creation, the world-wide flood, the age of the earth and anything else one cares to name.

Jesus' life and teachings were recorded by either eyewitnesses or those who knew them. His resurrection, in particular, was witnessed by people who also witnessed Him die a cruel death and who knew He was truly dead, hence their fear and despondency. They were quite naturally slow to believe this had actually happened, and so, in a sense subjected it to objective scrutiny. Dead men do not rise. Jesus Himself accommodated this by eating food to show He was not some kind of apparition and also invited them to see and touch His scars and wounds.

None of this proves Christianity, nor negates the ultimate necessity for faith. But, if Christianity is true, it would be expected to conform to reality, the reality of 'the world that is, and the mannishness of man', to paraphrase late philosopher Francis Schaeffer. This is the final point - the Christian faith and the Bible give a totally frank and detailed and accurate picture of how people behave, with all their weaknesses as well as good. The Biblical history is not sanitized. Every hero has some weakness. There is also a false dichotomy made between faith and fact or, as some put it between faith and science. This is to say that faith is necessarily divorced from the real world and has no connection with it, and even denies what 'we know' from the 'facts' of science. Such is not really the case, as many of the founders of modern science had no trouble believing in a creator and in the Bible, even after the advent of Darwin. The facts of both science and history are not incompatible with a belief in a Bible which can be literally interpreted, as it was meant to be in its historical narratives. However, this again, does not prove Christianity to be right above all other religions. It merely demonstrates that it is within the realm of possibility, especially as it claims that God has acted in history (and so some of this is historically and scientifically verifiable or refutable), in real space and time with real people being witnesses. What is outside of such proof, is certainly a matter of faith and the inner witness of the Holy Spirit comes into play, which is certainly known as a fact to those who have it.

J A T Robinson of "Honest To God" fame, who, in his work "Redating the New Testament" took the position that all of the New Testament Gospels were written pre- AD 70, with the possible exception of John. Thus, these are the works of people who were close to the events they describe. Jesus said "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me." (John Ch 14) So etenal life/afterlife comes only through Jesus who is also called the Christ. He claimed to be the Son of God and offered as proof many miraculous events and His resurrection from the dead. His followers at the time saw all this and believed in Him. There are still many who believe this just as there are many who do not.

For the same reason that Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Jainism, Hinduism, and every other religion out there is not the same as it was when it was first created. Religion, as an aspect of culture, is not static. It grows and changes along with the people who believe in it.
