Why cant you be Buddhist and Christian?

In theory....yes....Buddhism is technically not a religion and therefore a person could also be a Christian....i personally do not know of any "Buddhist Christians"

But once a certain degree of realization has been reached, a choice between the two paths will become necessary". Christianity is an "exclusive" religion in that it teaches that there is only one God, and that salvation is found only through faith in Jesus Christ.

Also, it is quite possible to recognize the truths taught in Buddhism and to practice Buddhist meditation and disciplines without worshiping its founder, Siddhartha Gautama, or any other deity. In a sense, Buddhism can be viewed as a philosophy rather than practiced as a religion.

So yes, it is possible to be a Christian believer and a practitioner of Buddhist philosophy.

From my understanding, Buddhists do believe there are "gods," but these are similar to the Hindu gods, not the Jewish, Christian, or Muslim idea of "God." Buddhists also believe that these gods are kind of just there. You wouldn't really ask them for help like you would ask God if you were a Christian. You are kind of on your own.

Buddhism is open to all people. For a Christian to become a Buddhist he would have to put down some of his beliefs (God, heaven, Jesus, etc.) However much of Buddhist thought can be applied to any present religious belief (e.g, Anyone can follow the Eightfold Path) without leaving the constraints of the previous belief.

No, a person cannot be both a Buddhist and a Christian. A Christian believes that Jesus Christ is the one true God and the only God to which one can be saved. A Buddhist believes that there are many GodÍs and Goddesses to worship.

To truly follow the teachings of Christianity, you can't mix it with any other religion. Buddhism has completely different teachings about who God is, who we are, why we are here, and what the afterlife consists of, as well as how to get there. These teachings are incompatible with true Christianity.

Christians have no constraint on believing in historical figures. Buddha is a historic figure. Christians can believe in him.

As far as Christians believing Buddhist doctrine, they can accept the Eightfold Path as a guide to moral conduct but might not be able to accept the metaphysical aspects such as there being no input by god(s) into human existence, the non-divinity of Jesus (a basic Christian belief), the absence of heaven and hell, the lack of salvation and others facets of Christianity.
