Illiteracy was normal at that time and place. It was said that there were only sixteen men in the whole of Mecca who knew how to write. This might be an exaggeration; and there were probably many more people who knew how to read but not how to write.

However, poor children like Muhammad were not taught to read. It was completely normal for boys of his social class to be taught practical skills but nothing academic, and it would have been surprising if he had been an exception.

Actually it is thought that Muhammad was not completely illiterate, as there are hadiths that show he could read basic texts. But he was not literate in the sense of being "well-read".

Muhammad was from a prestigious family in Makkah (or Mecca). His Grandfather was one of the highest advisory leaders in the town of Makkah (or Mecca). However, Muhammad didn't learn to read or write a single letter for a wisdom that Allah (or God and same God worshiped in Christianity and Judaism) required in order not to be said later that he learnt from old religions and faiths.
