There were two forbidden trees in the Garden of Eden: the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
If Adam and Eve ate fruit from the Tree of Life they would become immortal like the gods, but in their innocence they did not realise they would one day die, so this fruit was of no interest to them. By eating of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil they would become like the gods (Genesis 3:22: "And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us..."). The only difference now between them and God (or the gods) was that they must die. By eating of the Tree of Life, they would then also be immortal.
In Genesis 3:24, God drove out the man and placed at the entrance to the Garden of Eden, cherubim and a flaming sword to keep [block] the way of the tree of life. In the Genesis story, Adam and Eve could not be allowed back, for fear they would eat of the second tree.
