The Buddha taught that a permanent self, soul or 'atman' does not exist. These teachings are known as teachings on selflessness or emptiness. The Buddha opposed the caste-system, where people are categorized by their birth in a certain family. The Buddha opposed the view that people will become 'enlightened' after a certain number of lives. Instead, our actions (karma) determines our future. The Buddha did not support the idea of a creator-God who created the universe.
