Jacob blessed Ephraim instead of Manasseh because he perceived Ephraim as the younger son who would become greater and more influential. When Joseph presented his sons to Jacob, he positioned Manasseh, the firstborn, to receive the primary blessing. However, Jacob crossed his arms and placed his right hand on Ephraim, indicating that he would receive the superior blessing, symbolizing God's choice and the reversal of typical birthright customs. This act highlighted God's sovereignty in determining the future of the tribes of Israel.
Nowhere does Abraham tell fathers to bless their children. But Jacob in Genesis 48:20 says: "And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless [their children], saying, G-d make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh:" Read all about it in http://www.answers.com/topic/genesis-48
His son's Joseph's two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh. This in effect adopted them as his own children.Genesis 48:16New King James Version (NKJV) 16 The Angel who has redeemed me from all evil,Bless the lads;Let my name be named upon them,And the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; And let them grow into a multitude in the midst of theThey received the 'birthright' blessing with Ephraim being first. He would become a great 'company or commonwealth' of nations while his older brother would become the greatest single nation after him. There would be boundless physical blessings upon the 12 tribes of Israel while Ephraim and Manasseh remained part of their company. Afterwards, the blessing would be concentrated upon the two mostly.
Issac's sons, Jacob and Esau, came by Issac's only wife, Rebecca.Answer:The "sons of Isaac?"... "Isaac's sons?"... " 'saac's sons?"... "Saxons?"They probably came from the dispersed Israelite tribes of Joseph, who are Ephraim and Manasseh, upon whom Isaac's name was named by his son, Jacob (Israel)."The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and LET MY NAME BE NAMED ON THEM, and THE NAME OF MY FATHERS ABRAHAM AND ISAAC; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth... he (Manasseh) also shall be great: but truly his younger brother (Ephraim) shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude (company, commonwealth) of nations." (Gen.48:16-19)
The understanding is that the Twelve Tribes would correspond to Jacob's 12 sons, but since Levi was never intended to have land, the count of tribes lessened to 11. Thankfully, the Bible acknowledges that Joseph was very fertile and as a result, his two children will each bear enough individuals to merit their own tribes. Knowing this future, God gives them this mandate at the time of Jacob's death.Answer:Because Jacob (Israel) made them as his own and blessed them with the birthright blessing of all Israel with Ephraim the firstborn of God becoming a great company of nations and his brother, Manasseh, a singularly great nation. Does this remind you and any two brother-nations in the modern world?Genesis 48:5-6New King James Version (NKJV) 5 And now your two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine.6 Your offspring whom you beget after them shall be yours; they will be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance.19 But his father refused and said, "I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations."20 So he blessed them that day, saying, "By you Israel will bless, saying, 'May God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh!'" And thus he set Ephraim before Manasseh.Jeremiah 31:9New King James Version (NKJV) 9 They shall come with weeping,And with supplications I will lead them.I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters,In a straight way in which they shall not stumble; For I am a Father to Israel,And Ephraim is My firstborn.
Ephraim, who with his older brother, Manasseh, received the Birthright blessing from Israel:Genesis 48:15-20New King James Version (NKJV) 15 And he blessed Joseph, and said:"God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,The God who has fed me all my life long to this day,16 The Angel who has redeemed me from all evil,Bless the lads;Let my name be named upon them,And the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; And let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth."17 Now when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him; so he took hold of his father's hand to remove it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head. 18 And Joseph said to his father, "Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head."19 But his father refused and said, "I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations."20 So he blessed them that day, saying, "By you Israel will bless, saying, 'May God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh!'" And thus he set Ephraim before Manasseh.
Joseph was not included in the twelve tribes of Israel because his two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, were each counted as separate tribes, bringing the total number of tribes to twelve. This was a result of Jacob adopting Joseph's sons as his own, giving them equal inheritance rights with his other sons. Therefore, Joseph's portion was divided between his two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were then each considered individual tribes within the twelve tribes of Israel.

Jacob died at the age of 147 in Egypt. Before his death, he called his sons to him to bless them and prophesied about their future. He asked to be buried in the cave of Machpelah in Canaan alongside his ancestors.
Joseph's tribe is split in two and represented by the descendants of his two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh."...Israel [Jacob] said unto Joseph, I had not thought to see thy face: and, lo, God hath shewed me also thy seed... and Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim's head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh's head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn. And HE BLESSED JOSEPH, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day, the Angel which redeemed me from all evil, BLESS THE LADS; and LET MY NAME [Israel] BE NAMED ON THEM, and of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth... And Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die: but God shall be with you... moreover I have given thee one portion above thy brethren..." (Gen.48:11-22)."...Joseph is a fruitful bough... the blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph... all these are the twelve tribes of Israel: and this is it that their father spake unto them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them." (Gen.49:22-28)The very name, ISRAEL, is named on the tribe of Joseph above all the other tribes. And when the two kingdoms of the tribes of Israel split after Solomon's death... the ten tribes of the "House of Israel" were headed by Joseph's two tribes, Ephraim and Manasseh, while the "House of Judah" was led by the Jews [the descendants of Judah].
Yes, Joesph the son of Jacob WAS blessed!Additional Answer:Genesis 49:22-26New King James Version (NKJV) 22 "Joseph is a fruitful bough,A fruitful bough by a well; His branches run over the wall.23 The archers have bitterly grieved him,Shot at him and hated him.24 But his bow remained in strength,And the arms of his hands were made strongBy the hands of the Mighty God of Jacob(From there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel),25 By the God of your father who will help you,And by the Almighty who will bless youWith blessings of heaven above,Blessings of the deep that lies beneath,Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.26 The blessings of your fatherHave excelled the blessings of my ancestors,Up to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills. They shall be on the head of Joseph,And on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers.

I'm amazed at your question. The answer is quite involved and requires more space than this venue provides. However, the name "Israel" was named on "Ephraim" way back in Genesis 48. It all has to do with God's "promises" to Abraham. The promises that Christians today may inherit. "Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham... and if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise." (Gal.3:7 & 29) The world is basically ignorant of the biblical Truth concerning Israel and God's "TWO" promises to Abraham. The Creator God of the Old Testament, Jesus Christ, made a "material" and a "spiritual" promise to Abraham that remained a single united promise for a number of years before they became separated from each other at the time that Jacob (whose name was changed to 'Israel') passed the promises on to his sons on his deathbed. "Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a GREAT AND MIGHTY NATION, and ALL THE NATIONS OF THE EARTH SHALL BE BLESSED IN HIM..." (Gen.18:18). The world is most familiar with the "spiritual" promise of the coming Messiah. The "blessing of all the families of the earth." The blessing of "national greatness," however, is mostly overlooked. People have heard of the "Promised LAND"... but few understand its ramifications. The material promise was to make of Abraham a great nation. Abraham's children were to inherit the "fat places" on the earth. That is, the most prosperous lands and natural resources that the earth has to offer. He was told they would own the "gate of his enemies": "...and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies..." (Gen.22:17). "Enemies" denotes "war." In strategies of war, a "gate" would be a "cutoff" or "pinch-point" that could be opened or closed by the one who "possesses" it, to allow or deny the movement of "supplies" for the war effort. Such "gates" on the earth would be places like the "Panama Canal," once owned by America; the "Gibraltar Straits," the exit from or entryway to the Mediterranean Sea; the "Suez Canal," connecting the Med and the Red Sea; and the "Khyber Pass," between Afghanistan and Pakistan, all of which were once possessed by Great Britain. God's dual promises to Abraham were inherited by Isaac, then by Jacob (Israel) through a custom called the "birthright." The birthright is the tradition of the "firstborn son" inheriting the greater portion of the father's possessions upon his death. But, the birthright got screwed up at every turn, and the firstborn sons never got it. Ishmael was born to Abraham by Sarah's handmaid, Hagar, before Isaac was born. Yet, Isaac received the promise. Ishmael became the father of the Arab nations, and now you know the reason for the Arab/Jew debacle today. You probably know the story of Jacob's coaxing Esau out of his birthright with a "bowl of lentil soup." Jacob then had twelve sons by different women, Reuben being his firstborn. Joseph was his favorite son and was sold into Egyptian slavery by his jealous brothers. Yet, when they were later reunited during the "seven-year famine," the dying "Israel" passed the "material" promise to JOSEPH... and the "spiritual" promise went to JUDAH (the father of the Jews). But Israel "split" the material promise to Joseph BETWEEN HIS TWO SONS, Manasseh and Ephraim. It's recorded in Genesis 48. "And now thy two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt before I came unto thee... are MINE..." (verse 5). "...Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will bless them. Now the eyes of Israel were dim for age, so that he could not see." (verse 10) "...Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel's right hand..." (verse 13). "...Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim's head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh's head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn. (verse 14) Once again, the younger son received the birthright promise over the firstborn son. Joseph tried to correct the "error" but Israel went ahead with it. "The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and LET MY NAME BE NAMED ON THEM..." (verse 16). The name of "ISRAEL" is named on JOSEPH... not on the Jews (Judah). Specifically, Israel is named on the descendants of EPHRAIM and MANASSEH! Israel named "Ephraim" first. That's why Israel is referred to as Ephraim in Hosea (and other prophecies). "...Reuben the firstborn of Israel, (...forasmuch as he defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph...) ... For Judah (Jew) prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the Chief Ruler (the Christ); BUT THE BIRTHRIGHT WAS JOSEPH'S..." (I Chronicles 5:1-2). Of Ephraim, Israel says: "...his seed shall become a 'multitude' of nations." (Gen.48:19) Some Bible translations say "company" or "commonwealth" of nations. Manasseh would become a "single great nation." Two "brother-nations"... one, a "commonwealth nation" the other "one nation, under God." Sound familiar? The Truth of God's Word is fascinating. This subject is deep, but I'm running out of room.
