Martin Goodman (A World History of Christianity - The emergence of Christianity) says that it is very hard to envisage a theological reason for Jesus' crucifixion since nothing he was alleged to have preached was more shocking than is found elsewhere in Jewish literature of this period. He says that the political position of the Judean ruling classes, led by the High Priest Caiaphas, depended on their imposing their authority on the Jews, and that if they failed to do so Pontius Pilate could readily replace them. Because of this, they would move quickly against troublemakers.
In the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) the event that triggered the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus was the "cleansing of the Temple", when he overturned the tables of the moneychangers. The most important accusation against Jesus at his trial was of claiming to be the King of the Jews (Mark 15:2).
In John's Gospel, the event that triggered the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus was the resurrection of Lazarus, with the Pharisees saying of him, "Perceive how ye prevail nothing? Behold the whole world is gone after him."
Jesus challenged the religious (perhaps they were pious, perhaps they weren't) leaders for three main reasons. 1) Jesus fundamentally disagreed with their interpretation of scripture. While the religious leaders focused on strict purity codes that separated them from outsiders, Jesus showed that the heart of scriptures is that people can be forgiven their past sins and must pursue new lives of selfless love towards God and others. (Matthew 5:16-48, 10:1-12; John 8:1-11) 2) Jesus cared for the common people, and he felt that their leaders were very poor leaders indeed. (e.g. Matthew 23) 3) The religious leaders did not believe in Jesus, and they were very jealous of his popularity. They therefore challenged him with difficult questions trying to trap him, and he replied by challenging them. (e.g. Mark 7; Matthew 22:15-46; John 8:12-59)
In spite of pious claims by some that the Talmud mentions Jesus, there is no direct or indirect reference anywhere to Jesus.

Saint Veronica or Berenice, according to the "Acta Sanctorum" published by the Bollandists (under February 4), was a pious woman of Jerusalem who, moved with pity as Jesus carried his cross to Golgotha, gave him her veil that he might wipe his forehead. Jesus accepted the offering and after using it handed it back to her, the image of his face miraculously impressed upon it. -From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
