The rich and powerful had established religions which catered to them and reinforced the status quo. The poor, powerless are the audience for Christianity--"Blessed are the poor..."
It is also true that many rich and powerful people are also proud. They do not believe that they need anything, therefore they despise a religion that tells them they are sinners. Poor people are aware that there is more to life than riches. They are often humble and see the futility of striving for power and possessions. They are often also willing to listen to truth.
Because it is by Christianity that the poor is better than the rich.
" And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God."
"Woe to you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. "
"Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you."
Yes, Christianity did appeal to the poor and powerless in the ancient Roman Empire. It appealed to them because it gave them something to look forward to - the next life in which they would dwell in peace.
Most early believers were poor and slaves .
So they can appeal to Christians (and other people) and get more followers.
