Communism had mass appeal to many especially in the Third World. One of the reasons for this was that many nations had for years ruled by Europeans who had treated the native people harshly as part of it's teachings Communism rejects imperialism and colonization by foreign powers this had enormous appeal. In Europe itself many poor people believed that Communism could make their lives better and it's out of this hopelessness that many joined Communist parties. Communism also had support in nations ruled by right-wing dictators such as those in Latin America, who banned trade unions and oversaw great gaps in income inequality that lead to mass unrest of which communism was a part of.

it was an unjust war, half the people didnt know were vietnam was.we were drafting the poor and minority.the rich paid to get deferments.
The U.S. tried to stop Communism in a number of different ways throughout history; wars, money, etc. Most of the wars we fight are because we want to stop the spread of Communism. Also, post-WWII, we gave money to countries such as Greece, Turkey, etc, to ensure that they would not turn to Communism, because obviously if you look throughout history, poor countries tend to turn to Communism for a "quick" fix. We thought (and still kind of think) if we give money to poor countries who are in threat of Communism, that they will think the U.S. is a great country and want to be Democratic, which happend with Greece and Turkey.
Poor people.

Due to poor condition in Latin America, communism started to seem a lot more appealing.
To help rebuild Europe, and ultimately to make Communism less appealing. People in a country that is poor and struggling are more likely go give into the promises of Communism. This was a part of the "Containment" policy.
