The Bible does not say that King Herod waited until Jesus was two years old before he looked for him. Matthew's Gospel, in which this story appears, merely says that when Herod realised that the magi were not returning, he ordered all the infants under two years old to be slaughtered. This has led some to believe that Jesus could have been up to two years old. John Shelby Spong (Born of a Woman: A bishop rethinks the birth of Jesus) says that Matthew was clearly writing Christian midrash. He had Joseph take his family to Egypt just as the patriarch Joseph had done, in order to escape death, and the killing of all male babies reflects Moses. On the view of Spong and many other biblical scholars, King Herod knew nothing of the birth of Jesus.
