First, we would say that it was not Muhammad, but God who allowed polygyny. The fact of the matter is that God allowed it in The Bible, as well. Even some early Christians practiced it. It was never limited, in the Bible. In the Qur'an it is limited.
Second, while we can not know all the reasons why God permits or forbids something, we can try to understand some of the reasons.
Polyandry is not permitted for several seeable reasons. First off, a woman with more than one husband will not be able to know who is the father of her child. Secondly, men have the tendency to be dominant. Jealousy would most likely result in physical violence. Thirdly, most women are happy to have one man.
The opposite is true for men.
Most men naturally desire more than one women. That is a natural fact that Western culture tries to deny. But it is ridiculous to deny it - it is so obvious. How many men cheat on their wives? Monogamy is not natural for most men. Period. Islam recognizes that and makes polygyny above board, legal, and thereby ensures the rights of each wife to maintenance, inheritence, etc.
Also: the number of women in the world has always been more than the number of men. So God allows a way to ensure that women are taken care of.
