In 1218, Henry the Third required Jews to wear a "Jew Badge" and began to impose heavy taxes on the Jewish community. In 1253, Edward the First endorsed the blood libel that Jews murder non-Jewish children to collect their blood. In 1290 Edward issued an edict of expulsion, driving all Jews from the land. Why did these kings do this? For years, money-lending was one of the few jobs open to Jews, and Christians were forbidden to charge interest. By the time of Kings Henry and Edward, many minor nobles were deeply in debt to the Jews. This, of course, did not make Jews very popular. Driving Jews from the land forced them to sell out, almost always at a huge loss. The wealthier nobles saw this as a huge obligation to buy the debts of the minor nobles, consolidating their power.
