Historically speaking, there is a theory that in earlier cultures, like the Babylonians, people lived in matriarchal societies where women held public office and were also the religious leaders. In these cultures, their god was a female. As more different cultures became civilized and stayed in one place, they began to compete for land. This resulted in wars and the more aggressive cultures changed from matriarchal (with women in charge) to patriarchal (with men in charge) because the men mostly did the fighting. So these new patriarchal cultures and societies adopted the male image of god. This practice was handed down through the Judeo-Christian traditions and that may be why the Christian god of today is considered to be a male, or a man.

God became flesh and dwelt among us because the blood of the Old Testament animal sacrifices only temporarily covered the people's sin, as they were preliminary sacrifices to the real sacrifice, the sacrifice God the Father payed for with the death of His only Son, Jesus Christ. If man never sinned, the Old Testament prophecies would have never been necessary, nor would the sacrifice Christ payed for the atonement of our sins. God is holy, and He hates any and all sin, and the death of His only Son, who never sinned, satisfied God's need to reconciliation. Now, Christ (who called Himself the Son of Man) sits on the right hand of the Father, interceding for us, and pleading our case before God the Father, as Christ is our Intercessor. Lastly, Christ was 100% man and 100% God (this dual nature is called the hypostatic union), so He could not have sinned, but He was tempted, as all men have been, are now, and will continue to be until He comes again.

How can you believe in man as a god?

You can believe in man as a god if you believe that there is a higher god (or gods) who grant divinity to the man. Thus, the Romans believed that their emperor could become a god (divus, not deus, the word for a true god), and Christians believe that Jesus is both man and God.

Why do christians think that son of man is a suitable title for Jesus?

"Son of Man" comes from Daniel 7:13, which is a passage in which the Son of Man brings about the Apocalypse. The fact that Jesus calls himself this in the gospels leads Christians to believe he is the Messiah, who will bring about the end of the world and establish God's kingdom on Earth.
