Jesus preached this sermon for numerous reasons - to contrasts the old law of Moses with the new law of Christ, to instruct in doctrine, prayer, and to warn against false teachings and hypocrisy.
One direction
The Sermon on the Mount (Mt. 5) is a guide for Christian living because it shows us how we can be blessed by God. It also shows us that if others are against us, then the kingdom of heaven is in our hands if we are persecuted for our beliefs.
To stand out from a hedonistic, arrogant society who would compartmentalise God and have Him change to suit our desires, The sermon on the mount is as relevant today as it was then.
Thomas Henry Wright has written: 'The Sermon on the Mount for to-day' -- subject(s): Sermon on the mount 'Deadly sins and living virtues' -- subject(s): Christian ethics, Literature and morals, Sin
by following the guidelines in Matthew ch 5,6,7 the sermon on the mount.

A:The Sermon on the Mount is found only in the Gospel of Matthew. Luke's Gospel contains a similar sermon known as the Sermon on the Plain. Both are based on teachings in the hypothetical 'Q' document, which contained four of the beatitudes, with variants of the originals in Matthew and Luke respectively.
Probably you are referring to 'The Sermon on the Mount'. This is to be found in the Bible in Matthew's gospel, chapters 5, 6 and 7.
A GOOD Catholic brings Jesus Christ to the community. A good Catholic should be living the life that Christ lived, he should be living the beatitudes, and seeing every person as Christ. A good Catholic should be a saint, like Mother Teresa. A good Catholic follows the Sermon on the Mount and the beatitudes and brings goodness to the community. He brings Christian values into the community and spreads Christian love. This is exactly how the early Christians eventually converted the Roman empire.
