Diwali is a Hindu, Sikh, and Jain holiday festival of lights celebrated on a full moon that celebrates the victory by Lord Hanuman and Lord Rama over King Ravana who kidnapped Rama's wife Sita.. when she was freed and returned to the city over a year later lights were lit to welcome her home.. Hindu's also welcome the Goddess Lakshmi into their homes on this full moon eve as she is considered the Goddess of good luck to bless their homes so candles are burnt to entice visitation and welcome her.. temples have special puja prayers and sweet treats, lovely chalk drawings on the grounds, fairy like candles everywhere, worshippers dress up in finery, and households start afresh with cleaning and new paint similar to Japanese New Year.. some Lakshmi Temples gives out a brand new coin for good luck which one is to keep for the year and leave on their alter.. anyone is welcome to Temple anytime to celebrate this and other festivals in the Hindu, Sikh, and Jain faiths.. all 3 faiths recognize Diwali as Sikhism and Jainism stem from Hinduism.. Diwali is a beautiful celebration for the senses, and will leave you with a renewed sense of hope and peace regardless of your religious orientation
