Obviously, you are not Catholic/Christian. If you were, you would know. He never claimed to be God. He said he was the son of God. He never said he was God.

AnswerIn John 10 v 30 Jesus said ' I and my father are one,' The Jews who heard this were then going to stone Him to death because they did not agree with His claim. They certainly understood what it meant.

To answer the question, I think that it is more comfortable for some people if Jesus is not God, because then His claims and teachings are just 'good moral advice' and He is reduced down to a level which people can ignore or use if they choose to. Much like the wise sayings of Confucius of Buddha.

If He is not God then He doesn't have to be worshiped or obeyed and then the person can then essentially do and think as they please.

Historically, the Christian faith has had belief in Jesus divinity as central. He is the one with 'all power and authority in heaven and earth.' This is most importantly because of the resurrection. Thus his teachings are truly authoritative. The ability to understand them aright and the power to obey them comes from the Holy Ghost sent in Jesus' name.

The position that Jesus is God is also one of the most offensive of his claims. Many people like the moral side of his teachings and so they want to keep those without the 'offensive' part. I doubt that they think through the illogicality of it.

Who was Jesus Christ?

Mark: He was the son of man.

Matthew and Luke: He was the Son of God.

John: He was God himself.

In the Four Gospels are presented three entirely different conceptions of the Christ. In Mark he is represented as the son of human parents -- the Messiah -- but simply a man. In Matthew and Luke we have the story of the miraculous conception -- he is represented as the Son of God. In John he is declared to be God himself. "In the beginning was the Word [Christ], and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (i, 1).

According to Mark Christ is a man; according to Matthew and Luke, a demi-god; according to John, a God.

Why would anyone think that Jesus was not sent to earth to save us from our sins?

AnswerThere are many reasons people could fail to believe that Jesus was sent to save us from our sins: They may, for example, be Hindus, and believe that Brahma did not send Jesus. Therefore, to a Hindu, Jesus was merely a man. They may be Jews, who believe in God, but do not believe that Jesus was sent by their God.They may be Muslims, who believe in the same God, but do not believe that Jesus was sent by God to save us from our sins. They believe that Jesus was merely a prophet. They may not believe in God. If God does not exist, he could not have sent Jesus.

Is the father in The Parable of the Prodigal Son being merely foolish and sentimental?

No I don't think so. The parable was told as a rebuke to the scribes and Pharisees of Jesus' time. Jesus came to call the nation of Israel to repent but the scribes and Pharisees thought Jesus should be talking with them the "spiritual leaders" not the common people. The father in the parable represents God and shows His desire for Israel to repent and turn to Him.
