As a person is called by God to follow His Son (John 6:44), they will go through a deep reckoning of all past sins and improper attitudes seeking forgiveness. Having completed this, they then will go through a water baptism which is symbolic of the burying of the old self and coming out of the water a new creature -- not just a follower of Christ but an imitator (disciple). A minister(s) will place hands upon the arisen person (the water symbolizes the grave and death of the old sinful person and the new follower of Christ) and they will receive the promised gift of God's Holy Spirit - being begotten by God as Jesus was begotten. They will then lead a life after the example set by Jesus until their last.

Acts 2:38-39New International Version (NIV)

38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off-for all whom the Lord our God will call."
