Because it gives Christians the opportunity to show that they appreciate this GIFT of 'free will'. They can show appreciation by 'willing obedience' to God's righteous standards. It gives them the opportunity to 'repent' when they violate those righteous standards. It gives them a chance to 'repudiate' and even 'hate' the things God hates.

To be noted: If a Christian uses this gift of 'free will' in selfishness, and without regard for God's righteous standards; there are consequences. We were created by God, as 'dependant' on him, for continued existence.

How we use 'free will' shows God what is in the deepest part of our heart. It shows him where our motivation and desires really are. God can refine us where we deviate, but God does not force anyone who is incorrigible and does not respect his righteous standards; anymore than God does not shield us from the consequence of death (like if we were to use our free will to jump off a building).
