Answer:

Salah (prayer) is the very cornerstone of Islamic practice. If a person leaves the five daily prayers intentionally - with no intention to return to them - then many scholars have said that he or she has left Islam.

That ruling is based upon several sayings of the Prophet, like: "The Covenant between us and them IS the salah. So he who has left it, has disbelieved".

Praying to God is the way that a person can see things right. It is keeping in touch with the Source of good guidance.

Just like, if you drank a bottle of alcohol you would get drunk, right? There are certain effects that happen to you. You see things differently, and you act differently. Right?

Same with prayer - only the effect is the OPPOSITE. Instead of doing foolish things, and committing sins, prayer keeps you seeing things right, and doing things right. It affects how you SEE. It affects what you DO.

The Qur'an says: "Truly, the prayer prevents one from lust, crime, and fighting".

We pray to God, also, so that He will forgive us our sins, on the Day of Judgment. He who ignores God will be very sorry, on that Day. But he who keeps his connection with The Lord, will be very happy to meet Him, on that Great Day.
