Catholic AnswerIt may look hard to you as to be a monk is to give up things that contemporary society thinks are essential to leading a comfortable life, but look at it from the monk's point of view. The monk realizes that he was created to live for eternity, and that this short "life" on earth is very short, and determines where you are going to spend eternity. All of a sudden what may look hard becomes very easy - when you put it into perspective. Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, was very definite when He pointed out in the story of Lazarus that those who have it easy here are probably going to have a miserable time of it in the next life, and vice-versa. Put it into perspective!.
Another thing that most people do not realize is that when you love God, and are trying to live your life for Him, He gives consolations that most people never even dream about, and helps those who are trying to follow Him so that they find their joy in things like poverty, deprivation, and pain. Our Blessed Lord told us specifically to take up our cross daily and follow Him. He never promised us that it would be easy, but He did promise us that He would be there to help. Most of the things that moderns try to avoid, those who love the Lord embrace with great joy and peace. It is a paradox, but those who try to live their lives for comfort and happiness are those who never find joy or peace. Those who embrace their crosses and try to follow Our Blessed Lord in love find joy and peace in all the hard things of life.
there life was hard because they had to do lots of work

If you have made a study of Buddhism, and have made a dedicated commitment to putting into practice everyday for a period of time (lets say for a few years) the Buddhas teachings and you have liked the life you are leading and want to expand that type of life; and you have done some reading on what the life of a monk entails, and this life sounds appealing to you, and you desire to live the path to reaching enlightenment, then you are a candidate. The life of a monk is austere. It involves long hours of meditation and learning and plain old hard work (chores). The modern day distractions of TV and movies and radio are not available, your life is dedicated to the path. So if I haven't dissuaded you by now, then You need to find a Buddhist monastery and join thier sangha and present yourselves as a candidate for ordination. The abbot may set some requirements for you prior to accepting you and you will need to accomplish these whole-heartily. Good luck
