Before trying to understand the concept of third eye of Shiva we have to keep in mind that all Hindu gods are symbolic of the forces we have within us. They should not be considered to be human beings with superhuman powers.

The seven basic forces we have are represented by seven Hindu gods.

They are,

1. Dreaming force - Indra

2. Illusory force - Shiva

3. Voluntary force - Brahma

4. semi voluntary force - Vishnu

5. Involuntary force - Shiva

6. Status altering force - Shani

7. compulsive force - Yama

The semi voluntary force is a status quo maintaining force. Stagnation is a hurdle if we want to progress eternally.

The involuntary Shiva force is a mighty force that enables us to progress. However, normally it is a reserve force meant for emergencies only.

How to use the reserve force under normal conditions?

This question arises because the involuntary Shiva force is not under our control.

Parvati, the consort of shiva

The easiest way to counter the status quo mechanism is by diverting all our interest into a single activity. we therefore, try to divert the voluntary component of the semi voluntary force that is under our direct control into a single activity.

The Voluntary component of the Semi voluntary force that is diverted into a single activity is what we call Parvati.

Kama, the target of Shiva's third eye:

When we try to divert the voluntary component of the semi voluntary force into a single activity then the involuntary component of the semi voluntary force would increase our sexual urge and would not stop until the interest we have diverted into a single activity is redistributed once again among all the activities of our life.

The Involuntary component of the Semi voluntary force that redistributes our interest among all activities is what we call Kama.

The third eye of Shiva:

The only way out is by reserving a part of the involuntary force for destroying our sexual urge.

The part of the involuntary Shiva force that we reserve to counter the increase in our sexual urge is we call the third eye of Shiva.

Since we have very little control over the Involuntary component of the Semi voluntary force to effectively block it it has to be detected at the earliest or when it is in its latent period.

The eye:

Since among all of our sense organs eyes are the first to detect distant objects we call the reserved part as 'eye' so that it 'sees' the Involuntary component of the semi voluntary force at the earliest and thus abolishes it.

The final aim of the third eye:

When our sexual urge is destroyed by the 'third eye of Shiva' we can utilize the mighty involuntary force using the voluntary component of the semi voluntary force. This is symbolic of acceptance of Parvati by Shiva.
