Pilate had Jesus killed. As for your first question, they put a crown of thorns on his head and they put him on a cross and nailed him to it, later, when he was almost dead, they stabbed a spear through him.

He was already dead when the spear was jabbed in his side. It was a test, if he had shown any sign of life at that point both his legs would have been broken to accelerate death. Old Testament prophesy stated that the messiah would have no bones broken while on the "tree", so he had to be dead before the test with the spear.

Also you forget to mention the flogging prior to the cross that shredded his back and probably cost him over 2 pints of blood! In which condition he was required to carry his cross himself to the point of execution (until he stumbled and fell under its weight and the Romans allowed someone else to assist him).

First century Judea was ruled by the Roman Empire, over King Herod. Pontius Pilate was Governor of that territory and his sole job was to make sure the locals were kept quiet and under control. Rome did not want to hear about any Jewish revolt or rumors of unrest.

Jesus was what we call today "politically incorrect". He upset the Jewish leaders of the day with His rather loose interpretation of God's Laws, the 10 Commandments. He healed the sick on the

Sabbath, He taught things contrary to Jewish traditions, and made Himself some very powerful enemies.

The Pharisees and other Jewish leaders used the occupying Roman law to make Jesus out to be a dangerous rebel in order to have Him killed. They tried to convinced Pilate that Jesus was stirring up the locals and riots were sure to follow. They assured Pilate that under Jewish law Jesus was guilty of blasphemy, which was punishable by death by crucifixion. Although Pilate himself found no fault in Jesus, Jewish leaders insisted He be crucified.
