Christian Bible scholars generally identify 5 groupings of literature in the Old Testament: The Pentatuech (Gen, Exo, Lev, Num, Deut; also called the Books of Moses), the books of History (Josh, Ruth, Judges, 1-2 Sam, 1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles, Esther), the books of Wisdom (Job, Psa, Prov, Song, Eccl), the Major Prophets (meaning, the longer prophetic books, including Isa, Jer, Lam, Eze, Dan), and the Minor Prophets (i.e., the 12 shorter prophetic books).
Jewish scholars have the same 5 groups but different names for them.
Much of the reason for events and doctrine taught in the New Testament are to be found in the Old Testament. The New Testament would be incomprehensible without the Old. The reason for Christ's coming to earth and why humankind are in need of salvation can be found in the Old Testament, particularly in Genesis.
