In the novel, the parishioners regard Arthur Dimmesdale as the utmost example of charm, purity, and religious strength, never suspecting until the very end that something might be wrong (much less that he'd fallen in love and then impregnated the woman who later became considered to be the village harlot - for getting pregnant out of wedlock - and who he then abandoned to face the persecution of their deed alone). They literally put him up on a pedestal, placing a large amount of mislaid pressure on him in the process. (Basically, they think he's where it's at, and are blind to any other reality, even as they watch him slowly killing himself from guilt and grief, growing weaker and sicker as the novel progresses.)
Initially, in the world of the characters in the novel, the A stands for adultery. The meaning, however, changes as the plot progresses and some in the story regard the A as meaning angel. From the reader's standpoint, and taking into account that this is an allegory where every action, every character, every location means something in addition to itself, the A does not actually stand for adultery or angel but can mean just about anything.

However, there are some who feel that there is a hidden darkness or hypocrisy in his character due to his secretive nature and physical decline.

We do not know what you are writing with regard to - you will have to look inside your own brain to figure out why you are writing that letter because we can't read minds.
The word 'regard' is used when you have finished the letter and want to sign it. Example: Regards, Ms. Jane Doe. In the text of of the letter another example: Dear Mr. Doe: In regard to your fax of October 16, 2010 (then finished the sentence.)
