Donatism was a Christian heresy that originated in North Africa in the 4th and 5th centuries. It held that clergy who had lapsed under persecution could not validly administer sacraments, such as the Eucharist. This belief was condemned by the Catholic Church as divisive and contrary to the principle of forgiveness.
