The original name of Valmiki is Retnakara
Valmiki's real name is believed to be Ratnakara before he became a sage. He is known as the author of the Hindu epic Ramayana, a revered text in Hinduism.
Ratnaakara
When Valmiki heard the story of Rama narrated by Narada it was a thrilling experience for both of them. Since Valmiki derived such great thrill and satisfaction in listening the story, he decided to write it and there emerged the epic poem called The Ramayana.
If you mean Ram from the Ramayana--his father's name was Dasharatha.
Rama is the name of the greatest Vedic ruler of ancient India. It is said about Rama, "In the reign of Rama, suffering belonged to no one." The entire history of the reign of Rama is recorded in the Vedic literature, in the branch called Itihasa (i.e. History) in a seven volume account entitled the "Ramayana." The original Ramayana is attributed to the great Vedic sage Valmiki.
Valmiki's real name was Ratnakara. He was a hunter / robber by profession/practice. Later as adivised by Rishi Narada, he gave up as hunter/robber and started chanting and meditating the holy name of Rama. He continued to meditate for a long time in the forest with out realising that an anthill (Valmika in Sankrit) was formed around his body, thereafter he attained complete awareness (Jnanodaya). Thus his name became Valmiki.

One could at best estimate the birth and the death of Maharshi Valmiki to be between 700BC and 100AD. There are several varables to consider one of which Mahrashi Valmiki was not always Mahrashi Valmiki. So the story goes that there once was a highway robber who would rob his victims after murdering them. One day he meet his match however when he attempted to rob the Divine sage Narada who wise words caused the robber to beg Naradas forgiveness. The robber was so riddled with guilt he meditated for many years, so long in fact that ants hills sprung up around where he was seated to add to his torment, until one day a divine voice declared he had successfully paid his penance and his name shall now be 'Valmiki; meaning "one born out of anthills" So was was "Maharshi Valmiki born that day, or was it many years earlier when a highway robber was born? An additional clue to his birth and death dates, are that Valmiki is credited with writing "Ramayana" which is impossible to accurately date but is estimated to be written between 500BC and 100BC The most correct answer that I can give to the subject question is this.......... The answer to when Maharshi Valmiki was born is the same answer for when he died, and that is.... A long long long time ago.
